Access Control FAQs
Here we address some of our most frequently asked questions when it comes to access control systems.
Access control refers to a electronically controlled system to permit access to authorised people and deny access to unauthorised people. Typically, access control systems is used by a company to secure premises where employees,
contractors or visitors are given key fobs, card swipes or biometric finger prints to gain entry to specific areas.
They key fobs or card swipes can be activated or deactivated at any time.
Access control systems provide a range of solution and benefits to a company’s premises:
- Ability to provide a ‘electronic key’ instead of a physical key to staff to use. Electronic keys (key fobs or swipe cards) are easily removed from the system if they are lost or stolen which in return protects your premises as well as saves your business time and money having a physical key replaced and doors rekeyed.
- Ability to provide staff access to specific areas or doors on specific days and times.
- Access to advanced reporting. All data is audited and stored, this information is particularly useful for review of security breaches, theft or suspicious activity.
- Ability to remotely control any access control door.
- Ability to have doors automatic unlock and re-lock on specific times (i.e reception front doors, auto doors)
- Ability to interface to other third party equipment such as security camera systems, lifts, visitor management systems and much more.
All our installed access control systems come with complete training sessions and documentation. We provide all supplier user manuals as well as our own custom tailored step by step guides to help with the basic tasks such as
creating a new user, deleting a user and applying access to a user.
With our extensive access control product knowledge, we can also provide training on any existing access control system. We also offer our clients remote support packages to help with every day tasks. We can receive requests
from a company and action their request remotely. We offer 24 hour support and equipment monitoring with this service.
All our access control hardware is battery backed up with specific battery load to meet specific client requirements.
We correctly configure access control doors to function and securely perform in an event such as a power or equipment failure. For example, all of our external doors we wire for PTU (Power To Unlock) which means power will
need to at the lock for it unlock.
No. We will accommodate all existing door hardware on site and provide a solution per door.
Yes, card swipes can be personalised with a photo of the staff printed directly on the card. Visitor or contractor cards can also have a printed ID stating who they are.
We can supply all the printing equipment and help with the company ID design.
Our installation method is to use highly secured cards. For new access control systems, we use MIFARE DESFire EV2.
MIFARE DESFire EV2 is EAL5+ security certified which is the same security certification level for banking cards or electronic passports. It fully complies with the requirements for fast and highly secure data transmission and flexible application management.
Yes. Many companies have multiple site locations with access control. With planning, we can reduce the number of separate issued access control key fobs or swipe card to one for all sites.
Depending on a company’s security requirements we can lock card readers to only read specific ‘company issued’ key fobs or swipe cards. This is also known as config cards that is uploaded to a card reader.
Access control systems should be regularly checked for correct operation. A qualified security technician should always conducts the tests. What we look for when servicing access control equipment:
- On a successful badge at a card reader, can you freely open the door?
- Does the door close gracefully without slamming?
- Does the door get stuck in frame? Door warping or catching?
- Are the electronic lock inputs working correctly? (door reed contacts, door locked contacts and egress contacts)
- Are the inputs programmed correctly to alert the appropriate staff?
- Do push buttons and EBG’s function correctly?
We also offer 24 hour service and also remote assistance if the access control system is connected to the internet.
We integrate our access control systems with existing fire systems so in an event of a fire alarm, specific doors will automatically unlock for egress.
By law, we provide all emergency exits with fully monitored emergency break glasses (EBG). This means the access control system knows when a EBG is pressed and can raise security alarms based off it. Our monitored emergency
break glasses can either alert staff by sound (at the EBG), by access control alarms (built into the system) or by direct email (MPE Technologies emailing service).
